A Love Letter to Retail Design

"Loved by all is loved by none."
Artboard 8

Intimate and thoughtful retail design has the power to transform a store into more than just a place to shop—it can become a love letter to its customers, reflecting their needs, tastes, and aspirations while fostering a deep emotional connection between the shopper and the brand. When a store becomes a love letter, it speaks to the soul of its customers and the communities it serves, turning commerce into an intimate dialogue between brand and buyer.

Intimate Design, True Connection

Designing a store is very much like writing a love letter to your customers—a design that speaks directly to them in a visceral way, tells your story, and fosters connection, comfort, and engagement. Like a love letter that expresses sincerity and attention to detail, a store’s design should reflect a deep understanding of the customers' unique needs, tastes, and aspirations.

It's not about impressing the masses, but about creating a space that resonates with the loyal and true customers, the ones who walk in and feel an immediate connection to the brand. Every detail, from the choice of materials to the flow of the space and the ambiance, should feel like a gesture of affection designed to make customers feel excited, inspired, and valued. It’s an intimate gesture that says, "We know you, we care about your experience, and we’re here to make you feel at home."

Curating Their Unique World

This type of commitment is exemplified by Bergmeyer’s recent collaboration with Onyx Boutique’s owner, Kristen Rinaldi, where her customers were the heart of every design choice, from materiality to hospitality. Located in the budding town of Portsmouth NH, Kristen’s passion for fashion, and drive to foster relationships came alive in a welcoming space for her customers to feel both comfortable and inspired.

Kristen prioritized luxurious fitting rooms, locally sourced artwork, and high-quality furnishings to ensure that her customers experienced nothing but the best. She wasn’t aiming to appeal to everyone—her focus was on curating the perfect environment for those who value her vision and style.

As a boutique of brands curated by Kristen's discerning eye, our design approach infused Kristen into Onyx's design story. Inspired by her own aesthetic, adding personal artwork and visual propping, the design resonates with her shoppers and welcomes them into her world in a fresh and more intimately personal way.

We wove Kristen’s natural storytelling ability into the shopping experience through visual merchandising and signage. These elements help highlight the stories behind the brands sustainability efforts and distinctive details, ensuring that every shopper feels Kristen’s personal touch, even in her absence
