What motivated you to become a designer (or current role?)?
I’d have to say being a young laborer for my father, who was trained as a mason, exposed me to construction and sparked my interests. His ambition was amazing as he built my childhood home, my grandparent’s home and my two uncle’s homes all while having a day job. His lesson to me & my siblings was if you want to work as crazy hard as he did then follow his lead. But, if you get an education you can do what you love and not work yourself to death. So developing my interest in construction and taking his education advice I found that architecture was something that I excel at and enjoy. There is something really satisfying taking someone’s dreams and formulate them into a built environment.
When you are retired and look back on your life, what is the biggest accomplishment you hope to achieve?
Not a fair question for those of us with retirement racing towards us. One of the beautiful aspects of architecture is we get to leave a lasting contribution to society through our buildings. I find it very fulfilling to know that I left a creation that can be enjoyed by the users of today and tomorrow.
If you had to pick one word that best represents Bergmeyer's culture, what would it be, and why?
Family. Because we are more than just a team working towards a common goal. There is a deep commitment amongst my teammates in each other’s success both professionally and personally. It makes working together really fun.
